The History of Yahoo
Yahoo began operating in 1994 as a directory of websites at Stanford University. Its founders were Jerry Yang and David Filo, Electrical Engineering graduates. At first, they called it Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web. The guide organized websites in a hierarchy and they later renamed it to Yahoo.
It is a backronym for Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle or Yet Another Hierarchically Officious Oracle. It is then the domain yahoo.com was created in 1995. In 1197 it acquired an online communications company where Rocketmail became Yahoo! Mail. It also acquired a games company developing Yahoo! Games.
It then grew rapidly between 1990- 1999 diversifying into a web portal. It’s stock price increased tremendously during the dot.com era selling at an all-time high of $118.75 per share in 2000. However, the bubble burst and the stock dropped to $8.11 in 2001.
This challenge led to Yahoo diversifying their products and acquiring more companies such as Overture and Flickr, to strengthen its position.
